Many clients hire me initially to assist them in developing a better understanding of their property and its potential thorough the development of a forest management plan. Simply put, a Forest Management Plan is developed through three stages. The first is the forester coming to understand the soil and vegetation of the property in order to be able to describe the lands capability. The second step is a discussion with the landowner to discover what outcomes they would like to see for their property and informing them of their land's capabilities. The third step represents a collaboration between the forester and landowner to plan concrete actions that need to be taken to achieve the desired outcomes. Timber harvest, habitat and recreational improvements follow to implement the plan. I also do timber trespass cruising and litigation support.
Education:
BSF, University of Tennessee, Knoxville 1977
MBA, California State University, Fresno 1989
Experience:
I have had a broad range of forest management experience over the past 35 years. It ranges from building trails and planting trees while supervising a YACC crew on the Cherokee National Forest, running a pulpwood harvesting crew, to a wide varietyof natural resources and timber management activities on the Sierra National Forest. I began providing Consulting Forester services to small and medium landowners in 2000 and now serve clients throughout eastern Tennessee and the Cumberland Plateau.
Success story:
In a county near my home, a man had developed a several hundred acre property as managed forest and cattle pastures. When he died, his family hired me to carry out his wishes to convert the rescue pasture to loblolly pine plantations. Using chemical site preparation in the fall with hand planting in the spring, a new loblolly plantation was successfully established. Over 10,000 feet of linear quail habitat is also maintained annually and quail have come back to the property.
