Tending to the Land

For their efforts in forest stewardship, RFF Advisory Board member Bob Williams and classmate Bill Haines Jr. were profiled in the Spring 2017 issue of Rutgers Magazine.

Tending to the Land: Alumni Bill Haines Jr. and Bob Williams - one the owner of an expanse of acreage in New Jersey and the other a talented forester - provide a model for the stewardship of the state's forests, reads the title of a feature story, written by Kevin Coyne, in the Spring 2017 issue of Rutgers Magazine. For the past 17 years, the duo of Haines, owner of Pine Island Cranberry Co., and Williams, a certified forester, have worked together to rejuvenate a forest that "has become an inviting enough habitat to host the first wild quail known to be born in New Jersey since the 1980s," the article states.

For long-time readers of this blog, this story may sound familiar; I profiled this very same partnership back in February, 2013 under the title A Legacy of Sustainable Farming in Southern New Jersey. Since then, a major development, covered in this new article, has occurred. In 2015, New Jersey Audubon released 80 radio-collared bobwhite quail from Georgia on Haines' land in an effort to restore the species, which has been functionally extinct in the region for decades.
