Time to dispel the forest carbon debt illusion

The contribution of forests in climate change mitigation is presently very much at focus. As part of this debate, it is often stated that a carbon debt occurs when harvesting and that harvesting leads to increased carbon emissions in the short term.

In a new report, “The forest carbon debt illusion”, Dr. Peter Holmgren has analyzed carbon flows for different levels of forest management in Sweden and how these scenarios impact the atmosphere. Dr. Holmgren used to head up the work on climate change for FAO and is now advisor on sustainable development.

During the livestreamed broadcast Dr. Holmgren presented his conclusions and findings. Professor Gert-Jan Nabuurs from the Wageningen University in the Netherlands will comment on the report. EU policy input will be provided by Mrs. Anna Holmberg and Mrs. Emma Berglund from the Swedish Forest Industries.
