Art Dyas of Southeastern Natural Resources in Mobile keeps his forestry consultancy small to offer the best service to his clients and stay flexible. When larger projects come along, the network of consulting foresters throughout the southeast will often combine forces to complete the project. He also has a real estate brokers license and provides a full range of services, from land acquisition and sales to invasive species control, a big problem in the Mobile region.
Cogongrass in particular can destroy a tract of land. If left unchecked, he said, there will never be another stand of trees on that acre. When assessing new properties, he includes an expert analysis of the prospective cost of controlling any invasives on the tract. So near the coast, hurricanes are another a major concern for his clients because the best-managed stands receive the worst damage. Well-spaced, tall trees dont have the protection of a mid-story against the wind.
Like many foresters, he takes time to learn each landowners objectives before hammering out a management plan to achieve their goals. With degrees in both forestry and business from Auburn University, Dyas said his strong suit is big picture thinking. In other words, he can see the forest for the trees.
