We are part of the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service’s statewide network and the University of Arkansas System’s Division of Agriculture. Our mission is to provide research-based information through non-formal education to help all Arkansans improve their economic well-being and the quality of their lives. Whether it is agriculture, 4-H, health and living, or community development, the Bradley County Extension Office is at your service!

Bradley County Agriculture

Bradley County has 219 farms producing approximately $30 million dollars in agriculture receipts. Major crops include fresh market tomatoes, watermelons, beef cattle, and forages. For the past three years, the Bradley County Extension Service working together with UAM/SEREC faculty, three Bradley County producers have integrated heirloom tomato production and marketing into their traditional tomato operations. Producers received heirloom varieties "Cherokee Purple", "Arkansas Traveler" and other variety plants and assistance in their production. All three producers reported positive feedback from their respective markets and received an average of $2.50/lb. versus 50 cents/lb. received for traditional commercial tomato varieties. Each producer plans to continue or increase their volume of heirloom tomato production and is discussing the possibility of forming an heirloom tomato marketing co-op.

Bradley County Family and Consumer Sciences

The goal of the Bradley County department of family and consumer sciences is to provide the community with the most recent and updated research based information in four major programming areas. These include: health and aging, child development and parenting, nutrition and financial management. Last year, we implemented the Strong Women and Men program with 16 enrollees. This is a program developed by Tuff’s University that provides a low impact workout to build strength, balance, and endurance in the middle-aged to elderly population. 100% of participants increased their physical activity, overall health and well-being, endurance, strength and balance. Reports were made from participants to have the ability to reach items on tall shelves, strength to climb bleachers, and to simply stand from a sitting position without the aid of someone or support from a chair arm.

Bradley County 4-H and Youth Development

The mission of the Bradley County 4-H program is to equip youth today with the necessary life skills that will challenge, encourage, and motivate them to become productive citizens in their communities. One way of doing this is through community service. This past year, Bradley County participated in several community service projects, one of which was Alma’s Home for Children. Over $2500.00 worth of donations were secured with an addition of ten new community partnerships with the 4-H program. This community service project spent a day with a group of foster home teenage girls providing them with amenities that aren’t provided on a daily basis through the facility where they are housed. Each girl left with increased self esteem and self worth, and a feeling of commonality in their community.

It is truly our mission here in Bradley County to "Make the Best Better!"

Community Leaders Support Youth Projects

Each year the Bradley County Extension Service organizes a committee consisting of the county fair officials, and local retailers and business people to plan and conducts the annual Bradley County Fair Junior Livestock Exhibitor Premium Sale. This program was designed to add premium money to the fair’s premium to help offset the expense of purchasing, feeding, raising and exhibiting livestock projects at the county, district, and state fairs. Forty-three Bradley County Junior Livestock Exhibitors and thirty-seven buyers participated in the 2013 Bradley County Fair Junior Livestock Exhibitor Premium Sale. During the sale, $11,955 was raised. Since its inception, this program has raised $217,254 to support the county youth with their livestock projects.
