Brandon Smith enjoys a challenge. Thats one of the many aspects that attracted him to forestry. The dynamic nature of the industry is great, he said. Every day is different.
After receiving a degree in forest management from the University of Kentucky, he dove right in. He first worked for the U.S. Forest Service, performing forest inventory analysis in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and then for a company in East Texas as a procurement forester be-fore moving to Greenville to join the consulting forestry firm Larson & McGowin. As the Greenville Branch Manager, he provides leadership and supervision for the approximately 200,000 acres of the branchs timberland management operations.
He also tries to pay it forward. In addition to working with the Alabama Pre-scribed Fire Council, he also helps with the Butler County Natural Resources Forestry Planning Committee, which hosts a youth camp each year for students. I love teaching our youth about sustainable forestry and natural resources, Smith said.
