Castro County Extension is an arm of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, which teaches Texans wherever they live, extending research-based knowledge to benefit their families and communities. The Extension offers science based information on agriculture, healthy living, and provides educational opportunities through 4-H.

Castro County was created and named by the Texas Legislature in 1876 after Henri Castro. Castro served the the King of Naples, Italy as consul to Rhode Island. He later became an American Citizen and helped the state of Texas aquire a $7 million dollar loan from a finance company in his native country, France.
The county seat, Dimmitt, was organized and named by H.G. Bedford in honor of his Civil War Chaplain, Rev. W.C. Dimmitt in 1891.
