The Chowan Basin Soil & Water Conservation District (CBSWCD) is one of 47 Soil and Water Conservation Districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Formed in 1945, the District is a part of the state government which provides citizens the structure and capability to help solve conservation and natural resource concerns at the local grassroots level. Soil & Water Conservation Districts administer Virginia's Agricultural Best Management Practices Cost-Share Program, with technical assistance from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Cooperation between the two agencies and sharing technical expertise enables the Chowan Basin District to assist the community in protecting its natural resources.
Chowan Basin SWCD covers over 1,387 square miles (887,680 acres) in Southeast Virginia including the counties of Greensville, Southampton and Sussex. Formerly J. R. Horsley SWCD, the District was aptly renamed to Chowan Basin SWCD as its three major rivers all converge to form the Chowan River just over the North Carolina - Virginia border. The CBSWCD is designated as being in the Southern Rivers by the Department of Conservation & Recreation.
