Chub Sandhill Natural Area Preserve

SITE DESCRIPTION:

This preserve features a series of low sandhills and adjacent riparian wetlands along the Nottoway River. Much of the original sandhill vegetation in the region has been lost, but this outstanding woodland remnant supports rare and unusual plants such as Queen's delight, golden puccoon, and hoary scurf-pea. Sand post oak, rare in Virginia, is a component tree in the woodlands which also support a high diversity of native legumes. Fire once occurred frequently here, but the lack of recent fires has lead to the decline of some of the fire-dependent rare plants.

VISITATION:

Public access facilities are open during daylight hours and include a parking area, walking trail and riverside wildlife observation platform.

A preserve guide factsheet and map are available to assist in planning your visit.
