We are part of the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service’s statewide network and the University of Arkansas System’s Division of Agriculture. Our mission is to provide research-based information through non-formal education to help all Arkansans improve their economic well-being and the quality of lives. Whether it is agriculture, 4-H, health and living, or community development, the Cleveland County Extension Office is at your service!
Pasture and Forage Improvement
Cleveland County has approximately 7,500 acres of pasture/forage. Recent droughts and higher input costs have resulted in less than desirable forage production for many producers. Let the Cleveland County Extension staff help you get your forage program back in production with proven management practices.
Practices include:
- Soil testing and fertilizer recommendations
- Pasture inventory
- Pest management: including insects, weeds, or diseases.
- Production calendars
Gardens and Lawns
Last year, over 2,900 Cleveland County residents were reached with Extension programming through gardening newsletters, educational meetings, newspaper articles, home and farm visits, and social media. If you have a question about ornamental horticulture, lawn and turf, or vegetable gardening then let the Cleveland County Extension staff help you.
The Cleveland County Extension staff can help you:
- Identify garden pests
- Choose landscaping plants
- Trouble shoot vegetable gardening problems
- Beautify your lawn
Family and Consumer Sciences
We develop and deliver programs aimed at making life better, healthier, and safer for individuals and families in the county. Programs address nutrition, health and aging issues, family life, child care, and money management. Walk Across Arkansas and Strong Women and Men programs help adults to improve their overall health by increasing cardiovascular exercise and strength training.
4-H and Youth
This is not your daddy's 4-H program anymore; this is the new and improved 4-H for today's youth. In Cleveland County, there are over 125 youth experiencing new and fun-filled activities through the Cleveland County 4-H program.
The mission of 4-H is to provide opportunities for youth to:
- acquire knowledge
- develop life skills
- and instill moral character and ethical behavior that will enable them to be productive members of society.
Membership in 4-H is free and provides a different learning experience for most youth.
