The Coal Canyon Ecological Reserve is a 956-acre property with habitat including grasslands, coastal sage scrub, alluvial fan sage scrub, and chaparral. Animal species include lizards, mice, rabbits, and raptors.
The purpose of the acquisition was to provide permanent protection to sensitive cypress groves and other resources. In addition, Coal Canyon may provide one of the last suitable deer migration routes between the Santa Ana Mountains and the adjacent Chino Hills. The property was designated as an ecological reserve by the Fish and Game Commission in 1994.
