Community Farm Land Trust

Mission
Promoting vibrant local food and farming systems through community supported farmland preservation strategies, educational outreach, and partnerships that increase opportunities for farms and farmers to flourish.

History
The South of the Sound Community Farm Land Trust was formed in 1996 when members of several interest groups began exploring common goals. We are:

  1. Local farmers concerned about the economic viability of small-scale, locally-marketed agriculture
  2. Agriculture preservation advocates concerned about the loss of farms, farmland, and a farm economy in our region
  3. Affordable housing advocates promoting the use of the community land trust model in rural communities
  4. Active citizens concerned about sustainable land use planning and resource conservation

As a community land trust, we are dedicated not only to the preservation of land, but also to ensuring its permanent affordability, stewardship, and agricultural production. As a member-based organization, our success depends on the support of people who are committed to the future of agriculture in the South Sound.

What is a Community Land Trust?
A community land trust (CLT) is a private non-profit organization created to acquire and hold land for the benefit of a community and provide secure affordable access to land and housing for community residents. While the land trust holds title to the land, long-term (99 year) leases provide secure, affordable tenure for ownership of buildings and improvements and for uses of the land that the community wants to support – in our case local, sustainable agriculture. CLTs prohibit speculation and absentee ownership of land and housing, promote ecologically sound land-use practices through land leases, and preserve the long-term affordability of housing and farmland tenure
