Concho County Extension Office
Welcome to Concho County
Welcome to Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Concho County. Located in Central Texas, Concho County straddles the northern edge of the Edwards Plateau. The county derives its name from the Concho (or “Shell”) River, which in turn was named for the large number of mussels found there. Paint Rock, the county seat, is situated in the north central part of the county on U.S. Highway 83, approximately thirty miles east of San Angelo. Concho County comprises 992 square miles. The Extension Program, directed by the Concho County Extension Program Council, strives to serve a population who derives its main income from a mix of agriculture, small industry, and other commercial opportunities. The county’s two incorporated cities include Paint Rock and Eden. These cities, along with many small communities, contribute a rich cultural background of German, Czech, Polish, Spanish, Irish, and English influences. Two school districts, Paint Rock and Eden, provide education for the youth of the county. Major points of interest in the county include Lake O. H. Ivie, 17 miles to the northeast of Paint Rock; Native American Pictographs, 1 mile north of Paint Rock; Ingrid’s Wool Factory, located in downtown Paint Rock; Lowake Steak House, located at the intersection of F.M. 1929 and F.M. 381; the Earnest and Dorthy Barrow Foundation Museum, 5 miles east of Eola; Concho Springs Golf Course, 1 mile south of Eden; and Venison World, located at the intersection of HWY 83 and HWY 87.
