Mission
To promote the stewardship and sustainability of natural resources through education, technical assistance, and by helping landowners learn best management practices based on sound science.
Custer County Conservation District is located in Custer County and a small portion of Fremont County. It encompasses the Wet Mountain Valley which is surrounded by the majestic Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the west and the Wet Mountains to the east. The valley floor provides excellent grazing and hay producing land. The east side of the district includes lower elevation ranches and the small towns of Wetmore and Greenwood. The District is a mix of large acreage ranches, small acreage properties, subdivisions, and federal and state lands. We provide services to ranching families that are descendants of the original valley settlers, as well as to landowners that are new to natural resource management.
The District is dedicated to helping people manage their natural resources through education and land management project assistance. The District is governed by a volunteer Board of Supervisors. Monthly meetings are conducted on the first Thursday and are open to the public. The District works closely with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). NRCS provides a variety of assistance and technical information to farmers, ranchers, and other landowners.
