Farmland preservation is an important part of Durham County’s Open Space Program and conservation efforts. Since 2001 Durham County has preserved farmland by purchasing development rights through conservation easements that permanently protect the land. As of July 2024 the County has protected over 2,700 acres of farmland on 20 family-owned farms.
