The Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center was established as part of the USDA Forest Service's program under the Healthy Forests Restoration Act, and is part of a network of early warning activities established by the Forest Service nationwide. EFETAC provides the latest research and expertise concerning threats to healthy forests - such as insects and disease, wildland loss, landscape fragmentation, invasive species, wildland fire, and climate change - to assist forest landowners, managers and scientists throughout the eastern US, nationally, and internationally.
Center staff members are located in Asheville, NC and Research Triangle Park, NC, and have regional, national, and international responsibilities.
Objectives of the Center:
- Evaluate the effects and consequences of multiple interacting stressers and drivers of forest health;
- Increase understanding of environnmental stressors and their consequences for the benefits, risks, and uncertainties surrounding ecological conditions and socioeconomic values;
- Provide science-based decision support tools for land management and policy in the eastern United States;
- Provide land managers with credible predictions of potential severe disturbance in the eastern US with sufficient warning to take preventative actions.
Mission:
EFETAC's mission is to generate knowledge and tools needed to anticipate and respond to environmental threats. The most serious threats to forests, and the benefits they provide, inevitably involve complex factors interacting at multiple scales. Our challenge is to maintain a holistic and integrated research program to tackle these complex issues. The Center is further charged to deliver knowledge to forest landowners, managers, and scientists in a timely, useful, and user-friendly manner. The Center's mission and governance are more completely described in its original 2005 charter.
