Maps & Aerial Photos
Anyone thinking of constructing any improvement on their property should first consider if the proposed site is a good fit for the improvement. Important information can be obtained from a soil and topographic maps. As the name implies, a soil map details the types and distributions of soil in the area. The type of soil can have a major impact on the suitability of the site for such things as building construction, basements, septic systems, roads, ponds, etc.
Topographic maps illustrate the "lay-of-the-land". This will give the landowner a good idea of how surface water flow enters a property and, perhaps more importantly, exits it. Properties without a good surface water outlet are prone to frequent periods of flooding.
Both of these types of maps are available at our office. Soil maps can also be obtained online at Web Soil Survey - Home.
Persons wishing to see how the land has developed over time will find us helpful as well. We have an archive of historical aerial photographs of Fayette County dating back to 1938.
A call to the Ohio Utility Protection Service is required before any construction that requires digging into the Earth can proceed. These types of construction include things that might easily be overlooked, such as setting a mailbox post or driving fence posts. We have developed a checklist that might prove useful.

Lot Split Review
Fayette SWCD sits on the county Lot Split Review Committee. This committee brings together experts from several different agencies to evaluate if a proposed division or split of a property meets all of the respective legal requirements. This evaluation usually includes soil and topographic data. Click Lot Split Application to download the form.

Farm Bill Programs
A large part of the technical workload of the district involves surveying and designing engineering plans for Best Management Practices for persons participating in various programs offered by the United States Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service and Farm Service Agency (USDA-NRCS & USDA-FSA). These programs include, but are not limited to, the Conservation Reserve Program, Scioto River Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, Environmental Quality Incentives Program, and Wetlands Reserve Program. See the USDA-NRCS website or visit their local office, co-located with Fayette SWCD, for more information on any of these programs.
