HWR Engineering & Science is an environmental consulting firm based in Arcata, California. Established in 1994, HWR has built its reputation in the Humboldt Bay region, and throughout the Pacific Northwest by working with municipalities, Indian Tribes and non-profit organizations to develop innovative and sustainable responses to their unique development and resource needs. HWR staff and associates include specialists in ecological and civil engineering, hydrology, botany and community development. At HWR, we believe in an integrated team approach to project design and management. The core of our philosophy is an understanding that environment, community, health and the economy are all interactive elements that do not exist independently.
HWR provides a variety of project management and design services that emphasize appropriate, ecologically and socially sensitive land use and development. HWR staff have experience in all aspects of project development, including planning that utilizes "green" building standards, regulatory analysis and permitting, grant writing and administration, design, construction oversight, contract management and facilitation of community participation.
Due to our multidisciplinary background we are able to communicate effectively with clients, architects, engineers, and the public at large. Through our work we have gained significant familiarity with the regulatory and environmental review process at the federal, state and local levels and work to maintain a strong rapport with all of these agencies.
HWR’s ecological services specialize in projects with multiple land use objectives and includes wetland restoration, appropriate stormwater management, and innovative wastewater treatment that emphasizes natural systems and processes. This was recognized in 1999 by the Ecological Society of America when they selected Humboldt Water Resources to be the recipient of their Corporate Award. This was based on our work in community-centered, environmentally appropriate, water resource and land use planning efforts highlighted in the United Indian Health Services' Potawot Health Village project in Arcata, California.
