The Illinois Conservation Stewardship Program provides property tax incentives for landowners who develop and follow conservation management plans for woodlands, prairies or wetlands, according to a news release from John Church, University of Illinois Extension educator, natural resources, Rockford.
Land accepted into the program will be valued at 5 percent of market value for property tax purposes.
Landowners are required to prepare a conservation management plan according to the rules developed by the department. That plan will describe how the land will be managed to protect and maintain environmental resources.
When a conservation management plan is approved, the IDNR will notify the Illinois Department of Revenue. The appropriate county assessor then will be notified of the properties that have qualified for the special valuation, and the necessary adjustment in the valuation will be made.
Land eligible for enrollment includes 5 or more adjacent acres of unimproved land (meaning woodlands, prairie, wetlands or other vacant and undeveloped land that is not used for any residential or commercial purposes).
