Since 1961, we have been managing our client's woodlots and have helped them maximize their income and their personal satisfaction from their properties. Our recommended strategy involves marking light thinnings on a ten to fifteen year cycle. First, we remove the mature (over 24 inches in diameter), dead, dying, damaged and diseased trees. Then we thin poorer quality trees from all size classes to improve the spacing and overall quality of the residual trees. Over the years, we normally manage to cut less volume than the growth on a stand during the cutting cycle period so that the stand accumulates volume over time. In addition, by removing the lower quality trees, we improve the quality of the remaining stand with each cutting and increase the growth rate of these better trees by allowing them more room for increased growth. Regeneration at the appropriate time with a desirable species mix is always a consideration in our silvicultural decision making process.
