About The Kawartha Heritage Conservancy
The Kawartha Heritage Conservancy is a regional charitable land trust based in Peterborough, Ontario. Our mission is to conserve the natural and cultural heritage and distinctive landscapes of the Kawartha bioregion.
This exciting challenge cannot be met working in isolation. We work closely with community groups, government agencies and most importantly, individual landowners, to identify and protect key properties and features in the bioregion. As a charitable organization, we are able to accept donations of important properties, or to enter into conservation agreements with landowners who wish to retain ownership of their significant lands. We provide technical and legal information on conservation strategies and on tax and other financial benefits of conservation. We also accept cash, securities and other donations to support our work.
The Conservancy is a community-based organization learning from and contributing to community knowledge. We engage in research and proven scientific practices. It is our goal to understand our past relationships to, and ensure our sustainable future with, the land, the people and the features of the Kawartha bioregion.
The Conservancy is a member of both the Ontario Land Trust Alliance and the Canadian Land Trust Alliance. We work in accordance with the national standards and practices for land trusts in Canada, developed by the CLTA in 2005.
The Conservancy is involved in several multi-organization environmental partnerships in the Kawartha bioregion: the Land Between Collaborative; the Waterway Wildlife Species at Risk program; and the Ganaraska Hills Area of the Caring for the Moraine project. We are also a founding partner of the Large Woodlands Conservation Cooperative. Please see our Partners page for more details on these initiatives.
Financial support for our work is provided through grants from charitable foundations and others, fee-for-service activities, and individual donations.
