Ellis Forestry Service began in 1989 from the original company, Ellis Greenhouse and Nursery. Licensed Forester, Kirby Ellis, found a need for technical forestry services from area individuals and agencies and the new business was formed to fill that void. Ellis Forestry Service works with individuals, County Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the Maine Forest Service, Farm Service Agencies, the Maine Tree Farm Committee, Maine Master Logger program and others to provide services in preparing forest management plans, forest inventories, digital mapping, harvest supervision and other services as needed.
In 1989 most all of the work was done using a calculator, ruler, graph paper and a lot of walking. Computers were just making their way into everyday life. In 2010 computerized everything is the norm with digital mapping, satellite imagery, digital distance, height and diameter measurement, GPS equipment, hand held data recorders and electronic data transfer. Who knows what the next 10 years will bring.
Technical service providers (TSPs) provide services to agricultural producers such as farmers, ranchers and private forest landowners on behalf of USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). TSPs help these producers plan, design and implement conservation practices or develop conservation activity plans that can help improve their agricultural operations.
