The Lower Loup Natural Resources District is one of 23 NRDs serving the people of Nebraska. Set up along hydrological boundaries, the NRDs are the local agencies responding to natural resources challenges in a variety of areas. The Districts have the responsibility to protect and maintain natural resources in areas ranging from water quality and quantity to forestry, range management, soils and more.

All of Garfield, Greeley, Loup, Sherman, and Valley Counties are located within the Lower Loup Natural Resources District. The majority of Boone, Custer, Howard, Nance and Wheeler Counties are inside the NRD’s boundaries, along with portions of Platte, Buffalo, Rock, Merrick, Hall and Butler Counties.

The Lower Loup NRD is the largest NRD by land area, comprising about 7,923 square miles. Its area is larger than the land areas of the states of New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Rhode Island, and Hawaii, individually.

The District comprises about 10.3 percent of the state of Nebraska. At its maximum, the Lower Loup NRD’s length is about 156 miles east to west. North to south, the District’s maximum width is 96 miles.

The Lower Loup works in close partnership with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. There are District secretaries in the NRCS offices in Albion, Broken Bow, Burwell, Greeley, St. Paul, Fullerton, Columbus, and Ord.
