The Magnesia Spring Ecological Reserve is an approximately 3,800 acre property. The terrain is steep and rocky, and includes several narrow canyons. The dominant vegetation type is creosote scrub. The peninsular bighorn sheep is the species of greatest interest using the reserve. Other large mammals found on the site include coyote, bobcat, and gray fox. Avian species using the reserve include prairie falcon, golden eagle, Gambel's quail, and mourning dove.

The property was acquired in order to protect and rehabilitate habitat and a critical water source for the peninsular bighorn sheep. It was designated as an ecological reserve by the Fish and Game Commission in 1975. The site has historically been disturbed by human activities and off-road vehicles, but condition of the steeper portions of the site is good.
