Mark Standen received a B.A. from Colby College in 1974, graduating magna cum laude with distinction in the major of English. After a nine year career as a secondary school teacher in Maine, he enrolled at the University of Maine School of Law, earning a J.D. in 1987. He served one year as a law clerk for the Maine Supreme Judicial Court before becoming an associate with the law firm of Drummond Woodsum & MacMahon in Portland. In 1997, Mark became a shareholder in the firm and the chair of its trusts and estates practice group. He opened his own practice in Yarmouth in 2006. 

 

Mark represents individuals and fiduciaries in the planning and administration of estates, providing counsel to clients with respect to wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts, gift and estate taxation, fiduciary income taxation, charitable giving, elder law and contested probate matters. He has worked extensively with families in planning for the succession of closely-held business interests and unique real estate holdings. Mark is a member of the American, Maine and Cumberland County Bar Associations, a member of the Maine Estate Planning Council, a member of the Maine Medical Center Planned Giving Committee and has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maine School of Law. He has spoken frequently on estate planning issues before professional and lay audiences.

 

Mark lives in South Freeport with his wife, Liz; they have three children, Mary, Jed and Alex. Mark enjoys hiking, canoeing, fly fishing and playing guitar.
