The Northeastern Nevada Stewardship Group (NNSG) has taken the responsibility of the Northeastern Nevada Local Area Working Group (LAWG). NNSG has given the Sage-Grouse Pod the responsibility for carrying out the LAWG mission. NNSG is also assisted by local conservation disctricts.
The LAWG was formed as a collaborative effort among various interest groups, individuals, and agency personnel in response to the potential for listing Greater Sage-Grouse as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The LAWG identifies and studies issues associated with declining Sage-Grouse populations in the Elko region.
The LAWG believes strongly in finding science-based solutions utilizing ecosystem management strategies, habitat protection and rehabilitation and community-centered approaches to help recover the populations of Greater Sage-grouse. The LAWG utilizes the Elko County Sagebrush Ecosystem Conservation Strategy, and the watershed/Population Management Unit Assessments as a basis for suggesting ecological site restoration projects. All work is done through collaborative efforts by local residents and industry, and both federal and state agencies.
The LAWG provides reliable and timely information to the Elko County Commissioners, State of Nevada Greater Sage-Grouse Advisory Committee and other interested parties.
