Orleans County Soil and Water Conservation Districts mission is to use the delivery of science-based, locally-directed, technical and educational assistance to protect and enhance the health, safety and general welfare of the Orleans County residents through the conservation of soil, water, air, plant and animal resources. Soil and Water Conservation Districts were formed in all of New York’s counties in the 1940s as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s attempt to promote on-farm conservation practices through the Soil Conservation Service (now Natural Resources Conservation Service). In more recent years, County SWCD’s have formed a strong partnership with the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. SWCDs are primarily funded by counties but also receive support from NYS as well as grants from the state, federal, and private programs. SWCDs perform important work benefiting Lake Ontario’s water quality.
