Agriculture & Natural Resources
The Master Gardener program has 103 active members, who totaled over 3,500 volunteer hours of community service and 716 continuing education hours. The NELAMG Association participated in the Ag Expo Horticulture Seminar (220 attended), monitored the demonstration gardens at West Monroe Farmers Market, did several community projects, and conducted many educational workshops and programs for regional clientele.
Ouachita Parish currently has more than 48,000 acres in crop production. Grain crops, such as corn and soybeans, have increased over the last few years to represent the two largest acres planted. Demonstration variety plots of corn and soybeans were planted this spring to be harvested this fall. Results from demonstration plots will be used by producers to determine which varieties perform best in this area.
One of the LSU AgCenter’s main goals has been and will continue to be to educate the public on agriculture and its role in their lives. The Ag Expo is a strategic outlet in this education and demonstrates to our clientele our involvement in the community. It was determined that over 11,000 people entered and viewed the exhibits at Ag Alley. The Ouachita staff plays a valuable role in informing the public about the importance of agriculture to the area. The Alleys this year were cotton, beef, gardening and mini-farm education.
