Founded in 1937, the mission of the Ridges Sanctuary is to protect the Sanctuary and inspire stewardship of natural areas through programs of education, outreach and research. We protect over 1600 acres of land in Door County, WI.
A unique pristine nature area on the Lake Michigan shore. Made up of a series of beach ridges and swales, the Sanctuary harbors a diversity of habitats which makes it the most biologically diverse area in Wisconsin. On the property are the historic Baileys Harbor Range Lights that used to guide ships into Baileys Harbor when it was the busiest harbor on Lake Michigan north of Milwaukee.
Land Protection: We must protect The Ridges lands, flora and fauna from the harmful impacts of human activity, invasive species, and other threats that may arise.
Education: We must reach out to all and be a resource to help educate youth and adults in the importance of stewardship and provide opportunities for participation and personal responsibility.
Research: We must encourage, promote and facilitate research critical to this diverse environment and other relevant Door County habitats.
