We are part of the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service's statewide network and the U of A System's Division of Agriculture. Our mission is to provide research-based information through non-formal education to help all Arkansans improve their economic well-being and the quality of their lives. Whether it's agriculture, 4-H, family and consumer science, or community development, our Sevier County office is at your service.
Our office is located on the UA Cossatot Campus in De Queen, AR in the Agriculture/Adams Building.
Agriculture
An age-old saying is "to be a good cattle farmer you must be a good grass farmer first." Caudle Farms in Horatio reduced their winter feeding costs by $6,000 by producing hay that exceeds the nutritional needs of their cattle. They completely eliminated the need to use supplemental feed for the first time in many years. Sevier County Extension office would like to help you increase production on your farm operation through the use of good management practices. Some of the things we can assist you with are forage and soil testing, conducting pasture inventories, and completing production calendars for the whole farm.
For information on Sevier County agriculture programs contact Rex Herring, County Extension Agent-Staff Chair-Agriculture at (870) 584-3013.
Family & Consumer Sciences
Sevier County Family and Consumer Sciences Program is here to serve the people of our county. Our goal is to help you grow a strong family by offering researched based programs to help you spend smart, raise responsible children, exercise, eat right, navigate the health care system and communicate effectively. We believe that strong, healthy families are the foundation of a great Arkansas Community. Sevier County Extension and their volunteers are dedicated to meeting the community's needs through a variety of educational programs.
Reshape Yourself helps adults reach and maintain a healthier weight. StrongWomen and StrongMen is a strength-training program created for those in mid-life or older. Community Development - Farmer's Market
Sevier County Extension Service helped establish the local Farmer’s Market by providing rules, leadership training, and organizational plans. A live radio spot is conducted weekly during the growing season promoting the current produce available.
Producers can join with a yearly membership or pay for a day-by-day pass. The market runs from May until the end of the growing season. Vendors are required to be from Sevier or surrounding Counties. All vendors must follow state Farmer’s Market and Health Department rules and guidelines.
