Comments: The project involves in-stream channel restoration; as well as riparian restoration and preservation activities on approximately 8.5+/- acres of private property, which contains the left descending bank of the St. Francis River. The mitigation project will include 3,620 linear feet of perennial stream channel and associated riparian corridor, the St. Francis River is a 5th -order tributary flowing north to south and eventually to Lake Wappapello. The project will provide bank stabilization using a novel combination of stream barbs and rock weirs coupled with live vegetative staking along the river bank. The riparian restoration will create valuable wildlife habitat in a watershed that has suffered severe habitat loss to logging, agriculture, and livestock grazing. The corridor will be re-forested to provide wildlife cover and help stabilize the project area through root growth. It will be seeded with a mix of native grasses and forbs that will provide wildlife cover and forage. Additionally, native warm-season grasses and deep-rooted forbs will boost infiltration of runoff and improve overall soil health. Many portions of the corridor are already forested and are fenced to exclude the cattle on site. Preserving these areas will ensure that they remain protected and continue to benefit the St. Francis River. Part of the maintenance component of this project will include treating the existing forested areas for invasive species.
