The Conservation Fund

The Conservation Fund is dedicated to advancing America's land and water legacy. With our partners, we conserve land, train leaders and invest in conservation at home. From our headquarters in Arlington, Virginia and our field offices across the country, we've saved land in all 50 states—over 6 million acres of wild havens, working lands, vibrant communities and more.

The Conservation Fund started in 1985 as a smart solution to an old problem: how to balance environmental and economic goals. For decades, environmentalists and business or development leaders had been at odds, with each group favoring its own use of the landscape. Conservationist Pat Noonan, former head of The Nature Conservancy, decided to found a small, savvy nonprofit organization that would bring economics and the environment together—providing a win for all of America.

That idea became the Fund—a business of conservation, staffed by a skilled team with real estate, finance, legal, investment and science expertise. Rather than pursue our own conservation agenda and membership, we partner with community, government and corporate organizations—fulfilling their conservation priorities. Everything we do has environmental and economic value, from protecting "working" forests and recreation destinations that provide local revenue to helping communities grow thoughtfully.

Downeast Lakes Forestry Partnership
The Downeast Lakes Forestry Partnership secured a 27,000-acre community forest and a 312,000-acre conservation easement to sustain a rural economy.

Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve
The community of Coupeville, WA, and the National Park Service manage Ebey’s Landing for historic, agricultural, and open space conservation.

Landmark Grand Canyon Conservation Project
The Conservation Fund and Grand Canyon Trust are protecting nearly 900,000 acres stretching from the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Managing Flooding in Metropolitan Milwaukee
The Conservation Fund partnered with the Milwaukee Sewerage District is implementing flood management programs that protect wetlands and wildlife habitat.

Montana Water Trust
MWT develops water transfer agreements with farmers, ranchers, and other landowners that increase flows and benefit native fish in Montana’s 4,000 miles of dewatered streams.

Nanticoke Watershed Initiative
The Conservation Fund developed a vision for protecting and interpreting the natural, cultural and recreational resources of the Nanticoke Watershed.

The Ida Cason Callaway Foundation Preserve adjoins Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park with rare Montane Longleaf Pine. A conservation easement was sold to the State to maintain this land in forest use.

Pingree Forest Partnership
A landscape level conservation easement created to sustain working forests while protecting forest resources for wildlife, fisheries, migratory birds, and local economies.

Southern Appalachian Elk Restoration
Restoration of elk to its historic eastern range is underway in the southern Appalachians, with elk populations in Kentucky now exceeding 5,550.

Southwest Alaska Salmon Habitat Initiative
The Southwest Alaska Salmon Habitat Initiative is a cooperative conservation program to allow willing landowners to sell inholdings along salmon rivers for conservation and public access purposes.

Swan Valley
The Trust for Public Land is involved in a significant collaborative partnership to achieve landscape-scale conservation in the Swan River Valley of northwestern Montana.

Tapoco Hydroelectric Project
Historic legislation passed in October 2004 allowed relicensing of four Alcoa hydroelectric dams in Tennessee and North Carolina and advanced the protection of nearly 10,000 acres of wilderness lands.

Thompson - Fisher
This project purchased a conservation easement to prevent subdivision and development on 142,000 acres of working forestland in the Thompson River and Fisher River valleys of northwestern Montana.

Upper Snake River Land Conservation Project
The combined efforts of BLM, local landowners, and conservation organizations has conserved more than 14,000 acres of private land along Idaho's upper Snake River.

Vienna Community Vision
The Conservation Fund engaged with the Town of Vienna to develop a Community Vision Plan in anticipation of the 5-year update of their Community Comprehensive Plan.
