The Uncompahgre Field Office (UFO) manages more than 900,000 acres of public land in BLM Colorado's Southwest District, including the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area and Wilderness, as well as portions of the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area, Dominguez Canyon Wilderness, and four river systems—the Gunnison, San Miguel, Dolores, and Uncompahgre. The varied topography within the UFO ranges from lowland riparian along the Dolores River (at around 4,700 feet) to redrock desert to a moonscape of highly erodible Mancos Shale badlands to the piñon-juniper woodlands of the Uncompahgre Plateau up to the sub-alpine forests of the Cimarrons (at over 11,400 feet). These lands offer a wealth of resources and opportunities for public use and enjoyment.
