The Wehle Forever Wild Tract offers excellent bird diversity with over 170 species currently documented on the property. Two hiking trail loops provides easy access to multiple habitats including fire-maintained open pine-grassland savanna, a forested pond, and expansive bottomland hardwood forest corridors along a creek floodplain. A species often sought-after by birders is the Bachman's Sparrow, which is common in the pine uplands of the property and can be heard singing throughout the spring and summer months. Other species of special interest include Northern Bobwhite, Common Ground-Dove, Red-headed Woodpecker, Acadian Flycatcher, Brown-headed Nuthatch, Kentucky Warbler, Hooded Warbler, and Yellow-throated Warbler. The nearby Wehle Land Conservation Center is open on a limited schedule and provides camping, additional hiking access, horseback riding, and fishing. The schedule and additional information can be found on our website.
Day Use Hiking Trail is open during daylight hours 7 days a week.
Signature species for the site include Northern Bobwhite, Common Ground-Dove, Red-headed Woodpecker, Acadian Flycatcher, Brown-headed Nuthatch, Kentucky Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Yellow-throated Warbler, and Bachman's Sparrow, and Pine Siskin.
A Monitoring Avain Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) bird banding station is located on the property with banding sessions occuring during May-July. Anyone interested in visiting must coordinate with facility ahead of time.
