Delmarva Fox Squirrel Continues to Do Well a Year After Endangered Species Act Delisting

The Delmarva fox squirrel, which was among the first species to receive federal protections under the Endangered Species Preservation Act, has made a comeback on the Delmarva Peninsula.

“Without cooperation from private landowners the Delmarva Fox Squirrel would not have been removed from the Endangered Species Act,” says Glenn Therres, associate director with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Wildlife and Heritage Service. “We could have saved it from extinction, but it would not have recovered.”

New Law Would Reduce Reporting Requirements for Conservation Programs

Two congressmen from opposite sides of the aisle and very different regions of the country have filed a bill aimed at making it easier for farmers to apply for conservation programs administered by USDA.

Rep. Rick Crawford, R-Ark., and Rep. Ann McLane Kuster, D-N.H., introduced the Improving Access to Farm Conservation Act or H.R. 1163 to ease the financial reporting requirements for farm conservation programs administered by USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
