"Halleluiah, it's Christmas time. The weather has cooled (too little or too much depending on where you live)...For many folks, the yuletide season focuses in part on the Christmas tree."

As a tree farmer, "one of my Dad's favorite responsibilities was an opportunity to educate folks on the importance of trees to people and the earth. Gathered around a campfire, folks tuned in closely to his message while enjoying toasted marshmallows."

Charitable tax bill fails in U.S. House

Last week, the House of Representatives failed by just 8 votes to pass the Supporting America's Charities Act, "which would have made the enhanced conservation easement incentive and two other charitable provisions permanent."

Wildfire fighting budget gets boost,
but no long-term fix
"Funding for fighting and preventing wildfires in Nevada and across the country got a health bump in the $1.1 trillion federal budget just approved by Congress."

"But environmental, conservation and timber product groups remain disappointed because they believe Congress missed an opportunity to provide a long-term fix to the budget problems caused by fighting forest fires."

Voluntary sage-grouse initiatives protected from congressional spending block

"A federal appropriatoins rider that prohibits spending money to list the greater sage as endangered appears to protect on-going voluntary conservation measures."

The rider states, "This provision is not intended to impede current conservation efforts; it is imperative that stakeholders continue on-the-ground conservation and monitoring activities."

Budget bill doesn't void listing Gunnison sage-grouse as threatened, feds say

"The $1.1 trillion federal budget approved Saturday by the U.S. Senate doesn't void the...decision in November to list the Gunnison sage-grouse as "threatened"."

The bill's "language could hamper efforts to develop a final "4(d) rule" which would allow flexibility in how [landowners] can manage their land."

Colorado officials plan to challenge the listing: "The Service underestimated the level of protection that has been provided...to conserve sagebrush habitat in the Gunnison basin."
