The Land Conservation Assistance Network (LandCAN) is applying for a $1+ million grant with the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). One of the requirements is that we must provide a 50% match in cash and/or in-kind donations (items or service). The grant deadline is February 7, 2020.
Our grant application will focus on building online portfolios on the Habitat Conservation Assistance Network (HabitatCAN) website to provide resources for both the lesser prairie chicken and monarch butterflies, which are entirely dependent on private landowners to achieve species recovery. We are also applying to build a Georgia LandCAN and a Kansas LandCAN.
Vulnerable wildlife like the lesser prairie chicken and monarch butterfly rely on private lands—often utilized for agricultural production—for vital habitat. As conservationists, our solution is to create a system that allows farmers, ranchers, and foresters to protect wildlife habitat without harming their means to earn a living.
LandCAN has proven its capability to implement this proposal through successfully completing similar efforts with the greater sage grouse on HabitatCAN and building nine State LandCAN websites (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Texas, and Virginia). The Land Conservation Assistance Network website receives an average of 30,000 unique users per month, and the state sites average 500-4,000 unique users per month. These numbers serve as testimony to the value we provide with our online land conservation resources. |
