What's Happening at Your LandCAN!
Senator Angus King

May the Forests Be with You

Maine Senator Angus King was the keynote speaker, along with our panel of Maine forestry experts.  The group shared information with our audience about the future of the Maine forest industry.

The panelists included:

Marina Bowie, Executive Director, Biobased Maine
Brianna Bowman, Program Director for FOR/Maine, Maine Development Association
Donna Cassese, President, SAPPI
Tom Doak, Executive Director, Maine Woodland Owners

LandCAN was pleased to launch and present a recent publication that promotes the strength and resilience of Maine forests.  It offers great information about the history of the forest industry, where we are today, and what the future looks like.  We're not going to spill the beans here...you'll have to read it for yourself!

For those of you who reside outside of Maine, we encourage you to come and see for yourself what our Maine forests can offer you.  It's a great place to recreate with snowmobiling, hiking, cycling, fishing, boating, cross-country skiing, and much more. These fun activities are made possible because our private landowners allow residents and visitors to recreate on their properties.

Also remember that the successes of our Maine forests may be happening in your home state.  Explore forest organizations to learn about what's going on where you live.  We encourage you to become informed and get involved!

An untold story in American conservation and completely overlooked reality of on-the-ground conservation is that private landowners are the principal stewards of endangered and threatened species habitat nationwide.

This is one of the reasons we built the Land Conservation Assistance Network (LandCAN) and our endangered species conservation platform—the Habitat Conservation Assistance Network (HabitatCAN).

LandCAN is focused on helping to correct the decadal mismatch of emphasis on endangered and threatened species recovery. We have created the mechanism to encourage private landowners on a scalable basis to contribute to endangered species recovery. We are currently adding monarch butterflies to HabitatCAN with a focus on Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas as the first states for monarchs migrating north, and the upper Midwestern states which are the last states where monarchs reproduce before their southward migration back to the mountains of central Mexico.

Later this year, we will be redesigning the HabitatCAN website to update the information for lesser prairie chicken conservation—this prairie grouse is symbolic of the importance of private lands as its habitat is 95% on private ranch and farm lands in 5 southern prairie states (Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas).

Please consider a contribution to LandCAN in 2019 so we can continue to bring conservation solutions to private landowners nationwide and give a major boost to the recovery of endangered species on private lands. You may choose to make your donation securely online and withdrawn from your bank account by clicking on the donate button below.  We also encourage you to make a bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual recurring gift.  It’s an automatic, convenient, and simple way to make a significant gift with a greater impact!  THANK YOU!
